About Me

I am from dusted plains
and old moss-grown mountains

from pits of limestone,

and rotted roadkill, I can smell now
miles away

I am from sage waters in cobwebbed hollers
rippled by vibrating strings

I am from bullfrogs
Bank to bank

and fruity red popsicles

I am from ruled paper
and scrawling in margins

and double knotted shoelaces
so I don't trip when I step in twos

I am from my father's first apartment
where he knelt

I am from his brother's luggage

from birds of paradise
and the cardinal's feathers left on patios

Now I lay me down to sleep

sap sticking to my skin
amber as pumpkin soup on a stove

I am from tongues of men re-rhyming tunes
older than trees and twisted creeks

I find myself humming them
to the rhythm of a clicking fan

My name is Owen Spurlock, I was born in Wichita, Kansas. I don't know what exactly I want to major in, but I am currently bouncing back and forth between ecology and environmental sciences, and humanities. I love the earth and nature, and I would love to spend my career protecting the most beautiful parts of our world, but I also have a strong affection for writing, art, music, philosophy, etc. There's so much I love to do that its hard-to-find time for any of it! In my free time I love to draw, think, write, and make folk music, so I hope my writings aren't too hard to read. I believe that the folk music of the American south is such an underrated form of art- imbued with historical context. I tend to enjoy my own company more often, but that does not mean I won't stop talking about whatever assortment of topics I've found myself obsessed with any given week.

If you ever meet me, tell me about your favorite songs!

  1. hello owen! i like your choice to include "thinking" as a hobby or past time of yours, and honeslty im embarassed i didnt think of that, considering how much time i spend inside my own head. i think what i love so much about imagination is i can think of whatever i like, i think of people i used to know and love, i think about the future, i think about music and movies and art, i love to think! i dont know a ton of folk music, but if i could lend you a handful of my favorite songs that fit that style, id give you these:
"road" - nick drake (also see "northern sky" total classic from him)
    "back, baby" - jessica pratt
    "tin man" - america
"gentle on my mind" - glen campbell (perfect to think of "brokeback mt" to)
    and finally,
for a newer wave take on folk, "communist daughter" - neutral milk hotel

    awesome to meet you!

  2. Good to meet you Owen! What is your favorite song? I find that mine changes depending on the day and depending on my mood. I think my daughter got that from me because she says her playlists on Spotify reflect a disorganized personality.
It is good that you are honest that you don't know what you want to do exactly. My daughter has told me that my hobby is going to school beyond my writing. I have to admit that she may be right since I am in a doctoral and an MFA program at the same time.
Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with us.

  3. Hi Owen, I am from Wichita too. Nature is amazing and I love to learn about it, so I'm glad you enjoy it too. What kind of folk music do you listen to the most? I like a few folk artists. I like Taylor Swift's album folklore, but I don't know how folk that is but I also like Noah Kahn. I like your writing, it seems very peaceful and every word I read of yours is like a poem. I can one hundred percent relate to being a introvert but extrovert when given the chance. I liked meeting you and reading your about me!
